Tips for Developing a Growth Mindset

Updated: Feb 2, 2020

Understanding where you are right now is the first step to growth and evolving. If you cannot identify what needs to be tweaked, then you can't tweak anything. For me, identifying my mindset issues were number one on my personal growth journey.

So the question you must ask yourself is, do you have a 𝙛𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 or a 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩?

After a very traumatic personal experience {divorce at 24}, I had a fixed mindset through and through. I was depressed, unmotivated, defeated and totally under the impression that there was no point in trying. My motto was it is what it is. I felt like I couldn't be more than I was. I felt stuck. I allowed my thoughts and mindset to consume me on every possible level.

One day as I sat in Barnes and Noble combing through every self help book they had, I came across a book called The Secret. This book opened my eyes to the power of thought.

That day was a turning point in my life. I began deep mindset work to help bring myself out of the depths of hell that I was allowing my mind to live in.

Breaking down a fixed mindset

A 𝙛𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 makes one believe that their basic abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed traits and that "it is what it is".

💡How do you know if you have a 𝙛𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩? The telling trait is that no matter how much effort you put in, you think your talents or intelligence is fixed. Therefore, you tend to think that your effort is fruitless.

Breaking down a growth mindset

A 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 helps one believe that their abilities and intelligence can be developed with effort, learning, and persistence.

💡How do you know if you have a 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩? You think that anyone can be good at anything and that skill comes from practice.

If you think you have a 𝙛𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 but you want a 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 there is a solution!

𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 and THIS is the key to unlocking growth in all areas of your life. Believing in yourself is step one to accomplishing everything. And that requires a 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩.

So how do you transition from a 𝙛𝙞𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 to a 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩?

⚙ Step 1: Learn to hear your fixed mindset “voice.” Approaching a new challenge, the voice might say, “Are you sure you can do it?”

⚙ Step 2: Recognize that you have a choice. You control your thoughts.

⚙ Step 3: Talk back to it with a growth mindset voice. Encourage yourself to try new things.

⚙ Step 4: Take the growth mindset action. Think positive thoughts. The key is to recognize when your thoughts are turning sour and stop them right there.

If you can adjust your 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩, you can do anything.
